I think it’s more about my love for the book than the aesthetic design.

Thoughts?

I thought it was a lot better than Grapes of Wrath. I'm surprised it isn't more often viewed as his best work.

Why were whorehouses allowed to be run in plain sight in the Salinas Valley? Wasn't prostitution illegal?

>"...novel follows the intertwined destinies of two families—the Trasks and the Hamiltons—whose generations helplessly reenact the fall of Adam and Eve and the poisonous rivalry of Cain and Abel."

Someone please explain the appeal of deliberately re-telling a story that's already been told.

>The sex play of children has always gone on. Everyone, I guess, who is not abnormal has foregathered with little girls in some dim leafy place, in the bottom of a manger, under a willow, in a culvert under a road—or at least has dreamed of doing so. Nearly all parents are faced with the problem sooner or later, and then the child is lucky if the parent remembers his own childhood.

Just finished East of Eden and I really liked it. Definitely my favourite of Steinbeck so far. Great scenery, memorable characters (Samuel and Lee) and I can't help but think about it.

What are your thoughts/opinions it?
