I'm not quite sure that I understand what Bradbury is trying to say in Fahrenheit 451.

It's not that BOOKS themselves are necessary to keep society from becoming a conformist hell, just that it's necessary to prevent vocal minorities from enforcing their own standards of correctness on the whole?

Because it's not really the books that matter, it's the ideas within them, ideas that could be contained in other mediums besides the printed word.

Are there any other good examples of fedoracore literature?

Do you have any recommendations for his work? I feel like I'm doing something wrong. I've tried to read Fahrenheit 451 twice, once for school, and once myself, but I can't stand it; it bores me. I want to try and read something of his, since people seem to love his stuff, but I don't know where to start. Please help me, /lit/

Hi /lit/, I recently started reading a lot of dystopian literature, and I'd like to read some more, possibly lesser known stuff.

I've read the more acclaimed stuff like 1984, Brave New World, Fahrenheit 451, and some of 'We' - Is there anything I'm missing?

What is your opinion on the censure of classic works that have words or themes that later audiences develop a sensitivity to?

Such as the opposition to name of "Nigger Jim" from "Tom Sawyer"

Or, if you're familiar with it, "The Mikado" makes reference to Nigger Serenaders, (in the mikado's list of undesirables) which has been reworked by various producers and directors and no longer appears at all in the written fashion.

There are further examples, but these are the more polarizing in the United States.

Fahrenheit 451, the only good book my old grade school made me read back in the day (Now I'm 21, man how the time flies), and it's really the only one from that day that still has me thinking about it...well, this and The Giver.

I always liked the overall plot, and how Guy Montag took a serious level in badass near the end. First off, he fended himself from a KILLING MACHINE, AND DESTROYED IT. Then he went straight up to Beatty, AND LITERALLY SET HIM ABLAZE. Guy Montag must be the descendant of Chuck Norris or the like.

Also, I liked Clarisse and pictured her as an attractive teenage girl, who opened up Montag's mind and eyes...and I was sad when they killed her off. Too bad they fucked up her character ALOT in the movie to the point you WANT HER TO DIE, but she doesn't.

Also, Montag's wife, Mildred, is a total bitch, and deserves hell.

and thoughts on the books.

>Last book: Fahrenheit 451-Very good book. It was a quick read and it was more hopeful than most dystopian novels.
>Currently: Voices from Chernobyl-Interesting read. I love learning about Soviet history and radiation/nuclear energy has always interested me. Its really sad though. :(
>Next: The Secret Agent-Conrad-I have to read this for an English class. I got to pick the book, though.

Requesting you post your favorite short novel (say, trade paperback size, pp250 or less). Bonus points for a short synopsis.

Any genre welcome. Pic related.
