I just finished reading the great gatsby and I have a paper to write about how this book is a great american novel.

I seriously have no idea how to answer this question because all I see this book to be about is the story of some rich guy trying to get with this girl and the big mess ups that occur in the process.

can anyone fill me in on this? im normally really good at understanding the meaning of a book, but this one just seems like another cheap drama novel.

I think Nick is the perfect example of an unreliable narrator. Both the opening and closing passages work well to support him as being an unreliable narrator.

How does the fact that Nick is mostly just a bystander reveal society's assumptions or moral values?
Like how he sees the two sides of the upper class rich society, the new rich (Gatsby) and the artistocratic rich (Tom, Daisy, Jordan, etc.)

help please.

Gatsby believed in the green light, the orgastic future that year by year recedes before us. It eluded us then, but that's no matter - tomorrow we will run faster, stretch out our arms farther . . . And one fine morning -

So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past.
