Ship of Fools - Richard Paul Russo (2001)
A fun cinematic science fiction novel filled with an atmosphere of mystery and suspense punctuated by scenes of mostly passive horror. I found it to be a compelling read that wasn't easy to stop once started. I advise not thinking overly much about how or why anything happens and just appreciate that it is. It was significantly more religious than I expected it to be and since I didn't understand how that was meant to be thematically related to rest of the novel I found it to be a detraction. Those more religiously inclined may find more value in its mere inclusion.
The novel is separated into three parts: investigation, exploration, retrieval, with each one being longer than the previous. It was my experience that the first two parts were considerably stronger than the third, especially the ending.
This is the most popular book from this author, which although it seems to be relatively obscure won the Philip K. Dick award, which seems appropriate, and was nominated for the Locus Award for Best SF novel. I'm open to the idea of reading other books by him, but it likely won't ever happen voluntarily.
