What was the idea behind him? I'd like to hear from people who have read McCarthy's work, because you'll probably be able to situate it within that context. He behaves in a very strange and deliberately/philosophically driven way, but I can't exactly put my finger on what the thematic significance behind him is supposed to be. He behaves as if he's an immutable law of nature that has to follow his coin tosses, and he has some sort of "sociopath ethical code" oriented around of deals, as exemplified by him trying to pay off kids at the end. I have to imagine he's some sort of antithesis to the sheriff that speaks of being overwhelmed by evil in the beginning.
