Well one obvious metric would be if your text is grammatically and/or stylistically sound, but I usually go with my gut and ask myself "did I like what I read, was what I was trying to say conveyed through the text, etc" and if you answer with "no" follow up by asking yourself "why not and how can I fix this."
Lastly, ask other people to proofread your work since they might spot mistakes and shit that you don't even see anymore, this might be harder than it sounds tho

Don't really have a lot of recommendations sadly, since I haven't read a lot of those sort of books but if I remember right there must be a chart floating around on the lit wiki. I am reading the Cambridge Introduction to Narrative at the moment, so you could start there
