My whole youth I was bullied by my peers for looking girly and to this day I am regularly mistaken for a woman in public. So now the people who made my life miserable have all jumped on the anti-gender bandwagon and insist that gender is actually an innate biological characteristic and if you have a penis you're a male and that's the end of the story? My experiences have made clear to me that nobody considers gender to be inborn in practice and many people are willing to question your masculinity/femininity except when it serves to further their particular political agendas at which point gender becomes set in stone. I basically came to performative theory of gender on my own before I had even learned who Judith Butler was and I've never seen any reason to disbelieve her claims
