What exactly is the basis for the belief in equality? I take a look at modern society and I notice that people are not equal, materially, physically or intellectually and that this often hampers any attempt at equality before the law or equal opportunity and yet there is still this presumption of equality anyway. I've noticed this as far back as Locke and Spinoza, and while these cases may be justified by protestant theology, I can't find any text that attempts to justify equality from a purely secular standpoint.
