My girlfriend read English literature at one of the top universities in the world, so she's significantly more literate than I am. My best friend's also an avid reader - especially of poetry. Aside from that, both my parents read incessantly. A lot of my other friends haven't read since high school.

Without a doubt, the memoirs of Lord Byron. They were deemed so salacious by a collection of his close friends (including his publisher, John Murray) that they 'had to be burned'.

Probably just a lot of bumming, but it'd just be nice to read an account of himself written in prose.

Can you recommend me some (English) novels and poets of Romanticism?

Especially looking for some work with fascination for evil and sin.

Hi /lit, two questions about poetry that've been on my mind recently.

1.) Poetry is definitely not a part of the public conscious in ways it used to be. Do you feel this has to do with what might be seen as a decline in quality of poetry?

What I mean by that is if someone were to pick up a modern poetry magazine they would see what to them looks like a random assortment of words broken into separate lines for no seeming reason.

Also, do you think that many people who could have been great poets have instead become musicians? And instead of writing poems they're writing verses/choruses set to music.

2.) Is it worth reading poetry that has been translated? I've always abstained from doing so b/c I feel like it's impossible to translate but I'm open to trying it.

Thanks.
