Burroughs and Ginsberg were very good writers actually, Kerouac is quite different.

He really appeals only to certain types of people.

By magical realism is such an umbrella term, and it has been applied to authors like Kafka long after their books were written.

I just feel that the idea of the genre is used by writers of utterly vapid novels to appear like there is some intellectual substance in their works.

/lit/, who are some of your favorite American poets and why?

I've always liked the beat generation, especially Ginsberg because they changed the face of poetry by smashing the previous standards and making something new... and it just sounds so cool to see it read.

Could you guys suggest some books from the Beat generation that are worth reading? I've never read any of it.

How did /lit/ change or possibly improve your life?
The most obvious obviousness: thanks to the board, I'd now recognize a bunch of famous writers in the street. Too bad most of them are dead.
