Make sure you read Augustus next - it's the far better novel in my opinion. The same sense of pathos and melancholy but writ larger and more grandiose, and in an inherently more interesting (epistolary) style. A great exercise of the imagination too, taking real world events and fictionalising around them in terms of tone and emotion.

Plus, women see a much more three-dimensional treatment in Augustus. There are more characters in the book, all fleshed-out, all handled sympathetically. It's like taking Stoner and throwing the windows open.

Are there any philosophers with works on a similar topic to this quote from John Williams' Augustus?

I detect the odor of a moralist. And it seems to me that the moralist is the most useless and contemptible of creatures. He is useless in that he would expend his energies upon making judgments rather than gaining knowledge, for the reason that judgment is easy and knowledge is difficult. He is contemptible in that his judgments reflect a vision of himself which in his ignorance and pride he would impose upon the world I implore you, do not become a moralist; you will destroy your art and your mind. And it would be a heavy burden for even the deepest friendship to bear.

What is the official /lit/ consensus on Augustus by John Williams?

I read it after seeing it recommended her for history buffs and I enjoyed the way it was written from various historical figures' viewpoints. It made me want to learn more about them and the chapter made me feel sad for Augustus but also glad in a way.

The only thing that bothered me was Julia. /lit/ said the book makes her out to be more sympathetic than you usually hear but it didn't seem that way at all. She just seemed like a naive, almost malevolent, really selfish roastie.

I have always avoided novels about historical figures because they inevitably alter my perception of said perception.

Then I read picrelated and realized that there are ways to avoid such issues. Epistolarity being one.

so I guess my question is - what good books are there about emperors 'n' shieeet? There seem to be several novels about Nero. Any recommendations?
