Great novel. I liked it. I can't tell for sure whether the last 3 chapters left much to be desired or whether in my restlessness, as I perceive it, to finish the book I unwillingly vitiated the quality of those final 3. Objectively, Meville—in this novel at least—doesn't know how to or isn't willing to write engaging action scenes. The ending felt rushed and anticlimatic. It feels as if Meville was less interested in the final bout with Moby Dick and more interested in the psychological aspect regarding vengeance/trepidation when it overtakes a man. This would have been prudent if I thought no mortal was capable of sagaciously writing concerning both, but I'm not so sure such a notion dwells within me. Overall, though I've harped about those concluding chapters, this novel is sublime. Meville's prose is unassuming and intuitive (what with the constant use of '-ness') yet for all that is poetic nonetheless. Perhaps its KJV mode of speaking elevates its characters and their thoughts. This is all. Thank you.
P.S. Pip is my favorite character.
