Why does the eternal boomer love Tom Clancy so much? Are any Tom Clancy books worth reading?

Why cant I read ullyses? I've got up to the chapter with Stephen on the beach, and I can't comprehend it at all.

I'm new to reading, should I just read a lot more and come back? I hope it'll be easier then.
