My recommendation is to get the following two books:

>Donald Kagan
>The Peloponnesian War
This a good readable book for a general audience by a leading scholar on the subject. He provides a lot of insight and educated guesses about the political and economic forces that lead to many of the events.

>Thucydides
>On Justice, Power, and Human Nature
This is a book of selections from The History of the Peloponnesian War. It's all of the good parts like the speeches, debates, etc. You can read each of these as you come to that part in the Kagan book.

this is much more enjoyable than slogging through all of the shit about 'and then there was an earthquake, and then there was an eclipse, etc.'
