i understand that bakunin differs from marx , but my understanding of his diffrence was actually obscured by reading him, based on wiki i thought i knew what he was about, but after reading his letters I couldn't really tell how he and marx differed.

this might be parseing, but i think the point is what the acts and the people committing them symbolize, not the acts themselves. my understanding is that Sade was actually politically far from reactionary, and that the judge, and (Baron? not sure what the other three are called in the novel) are meant to represent the state.

again, I am not sure what you mean by degrading, he just moved it from france to italy and forward in time. I can imagine the nazi stuff seeming a little heavy handed, but that's really only emphasized in the first 15 minutes of the movie.

francis ford coppala said it was among the best films ever made. I frankly found the novel to be boring.
