I am thinking about starting a collection of old books.
Has anyone else started one?
If so, where is the best place to start looking?

Hi /lit/, I could use your help real bad.

I'm in college studying french literature, and I read The Hunchback of Notre Dame. Now I have a task of describing the personalities of each character, which is pretty easy except for La Esmeralda. I just can't describe her behaviour. Can anyone help?

tl;dr Could anyone describe La Esmeralda's personality in their own words?

A high concept sci-fi thriller in which a gardener grows marrow in the dimensional space that would occur if you took the standard three dimensions and made them into a moebius strip.

So, I'm thinking of two possible sci-fi stories to write after I'm done with my current attempt at a novel, and looking for the initial gut reaction of a seething pot of intellectuals, semi-morons, and tards. Let me know what you think, and if you so deign, whether it would work better as a short or would have to be a novel:

1. Subsequent to a Singularity, most of 1st world humanity lives inside massive subterranean computers, their minds converted to digital format. Men, statistically the cause of most violence, have been allowed to die off in these societies, leaving a society of female consciousnesses that reproduces by cloning and mutating a leftover sperm bank when necessary by "downloading" into physical bodies. Instead of money, processor time is what you earn by working in this future. People in the machine are essentially immortal and quasi-omnipotent due to post-singularity material wealth and technological know-how. Very nice, until someone uses an advanced 3D printer to print humans and download plagiarized consciousnesses into them in order to create a separate society she will use to destroy the society she views as oppressing her.

2. Immediately in the aftermath of a singularity event, a young man discovers the love of his life is no longer in love with him. Distraught, he uses a santa claus machine and AI to design and construct a spaceship with which he travels the galaxy - but not before illicitly downloading his love's mind. The journey from there involves his realization that she will never love him, and his search for meaning in the universe. A central theme will be an attempt to answer the question - can anything ever surpass human companionship for a human?

Were does this picture come from, /lit/?
(in my head, it's related to Philip K. Dick or some cyberpunk story)

If you can't help with the pic, feel free to use this thread as a "Top 5 Philip K. Dick novels". Here's mine:
1. Ubik
2. The Man in the High Castle
3. VALIS
4. Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?
5. Flow My Tears, the Policeman Said

What is the best music to listen to while reading?(if any)
Something that is good but still allows you to focus on your book.
I've seen many threads like this on /lit/ before, but never seen any good suggestions.

If you can't, why?

Had a pretty interesting idea for a story from a dream I had last night, want to know what you guys think.

A detective in Japan is assigned to a case where upwards of 10 people described as the otaku type committed suicide, and the one link they all had in common was that before they killed themselves they went to a massage parlor/soapland/love hotel (whichever fits) that advertises "An Otaku Dating Experience Like No Other!" The detective investigates the place, and by investigates, I mean decides to get his rocks off. He negotiates a fee with the proprietor, and goes into the room and waits. After a few minutes, in comes... An honest to God catgirl.

Thoughts so far?

Somewhere in the future I want to write a surrealist horror novel, and one of the elements I want to include is the sometimes extremely vicious social environment in Japan. Can anyone point me to any reference material on this subject?

This is kind of what I've started this summer, and hope to continue.
I've made a giant list of books I want to read, though at this point it will probably take me quite a while. I've also started working out, mostly for my health/confidence but also because I believe people should be in top condition both mentally and physically. One thing this thread made me think of is concentrating more on my violin playing, I've played for almost 9 years now but in a public school orchestra class setting. I don't want those skills to go to waste, so I'm gonna start focusing on that too.
I wish I could paint/draw, but I'm absolutely awful. Maybe I'll take a class when I'm older, I dunno.
I tried writing back when I was in like, middle school, and sometimes when I find the old copies and read them it's laughably bad. Maybe one day I'll be inspired to actually write something decent.
You guys are pretty cool, good luck with your endeavors.

Oh, and have this image because its the first thing that I saw when I opened my pictures folder.

I'm interested in one day writing the most creepy, disgusting, disturbing, fucked up, and overall entertaining horror novel I can possibly think of, and one of the elements of it would include echoes of the dark side of Japan's sometimes incredibly vicious social environment. Can anyone point me to any sort of paper or study that analyzes it?
