I have the same opinion about my own native language Norwegian. It is very similar to English in syntax, but I feel like it lacks a lot of poetic nuance and flair that English has perhaps because it is basically the creole language of imperialists.

Norway does have writers like Hamsun and more modern people like Knausgaard, but there is something about Norwegian that is too forward, too direct, for a lack of a better word, too Germanic. It can have good prose, but I feel like the prose is almost always Hemingway-esque, and never like, say a McCarthy or Pynchon.
