Good point. They're usually level-headed as well and would question the value of having foreign policy decisions vetted by paperback authors who happened to write in a given genre because it paid better than bad poetry. One might as well appoint Navarth Connatic.

I assume that this was in the early Sixties though so Vance may not have reconciled himself (as he later appeared to) to being a fringe player in the genre. His attitude in the Seventies would seem a fair bit more reticent, even dismissive.
