Hello, /lit/.
~

-- TL;DR: Is there some way to drastically improve my reading speed? --

.
I'm coming from /v/ and I didn't ever read much - neither in school, nor at home or while traveling, but I didn't really mind when I had to read something (read: was forced to). I found some of the literature I had to read at school genuinely enjoyable, but it has always saddened me that reading always takes me so damn long. Even when I'm here, on 4chan, and I read a thread, it takes me up to two hours per thread. I guess I'm just a slow reader, since my peers read damn thick books on a single weekend, while I could only finish a short lecture.
I'll be (most probably), after 13 years of school, graduating soon from gymnasium here in Germany and, having the, excluding university degrees, highest possible educational degree I don't want to be... actually quite uneducated.

This is why I have to get into reading, but it is so unimaginably unsatisfactory to me, even although I'm quite interested in languages and all the topics I read about.

I know that there are some optimization methods exploiting the way the brain decrypts and encrypts data, for example only skipping over words since you can figure them often out by just seeing the first and last letter of the word, while the mind auto-fills the rest out of the context.

Help!

>Start reading Balzac for the first time.
>First 30 pages are about how the author hates the people in Paris.
>Finally introduce main character.
>He was the most beautiful, most intelligent, greatest at everything.
>digress into talking about the youth of Paris.
>Book is almost half over and nothing has happened.

FUCKING BALZAC!

You see, this is an absurd misconception.
