What do you guys think of Reve's autobiographical works like:
- Op Weg Naar het Einde
- Nader Tot U
- Het Boek van de Violet en de Dood

Reve is seen as one of the best Dutch post-war writers. And these works are commonly regarded as his best (aside from De Avonden). But I don't know what to take away from them.

The prose is beautiful but the subject matter is highly personal with tons of sexual ideations involving cruelty, religion and death. The tone is very off-the cuff or matter of fact, ironical even. With absurd and 'normal' things adressed in much the same way, leaving you guessing what he truely believes.
