I agree with the other anons that Star Maker and Last And First Men are great and probably his two best books, but do also check out his book Sirius, its not quite as good as Star Maker and Last And First Men but its a surprisingly moving story considering its about a genetically altered sheep dog with human intelligence who tries to figure out what his purpose in life.
