Any ideas for best-of illustrations?

One concern I have about making the best-of book-like is that it'll look too plain and whitewash some of that &amp Essence(TM). Apart from illustrations to go along with the titles/introductions of longer pieces, maybe we can use the bumper pages of short pieces/poems to inject some more art or typographic fun.

You're doing some real nice stuff. What's the software you're using for these? I've been using GIMP for my few mock-ups, and I'm thinking Scribus or LaTeX would be good for the proper typesetting. I've only got experience with LaTeX, but I think it'd be a bitch to do anything interesting with it, where as Scribus has templates but those might make things a little too cookie-cutter.
