I remember Margaret Atwood saying that everything she wrote in The Handmaid's Tale is based on reality. All of it has been done before by some culture or another.
Her premise of a fertility crisis may not be realistic though, given that the population is higher than ever. What it would take for this type of scenario to play out in real life?
