I'd say it works that way in both senses. Tell a kid he's 'special' and he gives up, tell a kid he's 'gifted' and he either acts like a dick to everyone he thinks are below him or gives up because he thinks he can coast by on smarts. The latter happened to me and I'm still feeling the effects, my GPA was so fucked in high school because I was one of these "smart but lazy" assholes until senior year, and now I go to a shitty college. Feels bad man, never make your kids think they're smarter than they really are.
