Does that make him a famous American poet and paragon of secular application of Evangelicalism?

It's amazing how much people who are into orthodoxy are capable of hermetically closing themselves away from anything that wasn't poured over by a posse of quarrelsome hyper-fixated hermits ruled over by savage Islamic overlords (or at least Greek opportunists).
Just because some monks fought over him or liked him doesn't make him in any shape way or form more relevant to the thread question than actual secular poetry of the time.
