If you're really so daft that you need a "scientific" explanation, perhaps you could look into literature's therapeutic or rhetorical value.

I don't understand why you're so incensed. The people I know who have strong scientific backgrounds appreciate literature and regularly contribute to the school's literary magazine. One is going to MIT, and the other is a thirteen-year-old in the midst of an independent study on quantum physics. They would both agree that appreciating science and appreciating art are not mutually exclusive.
