I hate deckle edge because it makes it harder to thumb to a specific page. When I flip through a book my thumb makes contact with all the pages, so I stop when I get to the page I need. Do that with a deckle edge and the pages will turn in chunks and you'll turn to the pages that stick out the most again and again. Imagine needing to frequently reference page 100 and always thumbing to 110 and having to flip back. That's gonna get fucking annoying after a while.

If it were 100 years ago and the deckle edge were an unavoidable result of the papermaking process, and it boosted the price of the book to remove it, I wouldn't have such a strong opinion. But literally the only function of deckle edge today is to look ye olde timey and pander to the kind of tacky, pretentious past fetishists who are willing to pay more for something because someone in a factory did extra work to make it look shittier. It's like buying pre-distressed jeans or being into steampunk. Face it: if you like deckle edge, you might as well just get it over with and fill your shelves with those hideous Barnes and Noble leather bound "collectible" editions and start your YA book review YouTube channel.

Hey /lit/. I'm currently reading your favorite tome, Infinite Jest, by Davidoff Foster-Waldau. I have a hard copy, but someone once linked a page with the full text free in html. I'd like to be able to ctrl+F peripheral characters and shit I know has come up but didn't flag when it did 300 pages ago. That link would be appreciated.

Also, general meme-free unironic /ij/ thread, if you want.

did anyone else notice how often characters are introduced multiple times and jokes are used multiple times? A character is introduced one very specific way and then nearly the exact same description is given a few/tens of pages later to re-introduce the character again.

or the joke about scrubbing your brain clean is re-hashed a few different times as if it's the first time it's being said. There are other instances of this.

It feels sloppy and weird and I've never noticed it in any other books of similar length. Was he expecting people to read it out of order or forget about characters or read only 10 pages every other week or something?

/lit/ has an Infinite Jest summer reading book group, and it continues TODAY! (Today is Day 4: pages 49-93)
If you have an interest in this book -- whether you have read it or not -- please consider joining us!

We will be reading Infinite Jest from June 14th – August 22nd with an average pace of around 15 to 16 pages a day.

Discussions will take place right here on /lit/ every weekend, though a thread will probably float around throughout the week.
Our first proper discussion will take place between the 20th and 21st of June.

Official Schedule
========================================================================================

Each day I (OP) will roll 2 standard playing dice to determine the number of pages that will be read for the day, the highest then being 12 and the lowest being 2.

This however, only sets the global maximum. Each reader flips a coin twice, for each tailside removes 1 page and each headside adds one page to their own count. Should this change push the reader's personal count into zero they must sit out the day.

Once in discussion said readers may only interact with those whose numbers are equal to or less than their own count. Those sitting out of reading for the day are not officially banned from conversation, but having their count on the lowest possible number means they can only be spoken to (but not respond to) people of higher counts or speak to others sharing their counts and so people who have not read today and will only be able to recount pages of previous days.

When one anon finishes the book, no matter where the other readers are, they will be given one day (The Lightning Round) to finish it themselves before the final discussion which will take place 24 hours after the first to finishes' post regarding their finish and will carry on for another 24 hours before the mods will be contacted to delete the thread for good and disallow any further conversation.

This is the official schedule and it will not see any changes unless this post ends in repeating digits.>>6649313
