Why do so many people read this and write off McCandless as a naive edgy kid? He lived his ideals to the fullest and expressed no regrets or resentment.

He also probably died of a toxin that was unknown at the time and might have just as well killed an experienced outdoorsman.

Read it when I was 13 and was basically a McCandless fanboy. But when that horrible, horrible, embarrassing phase ended, it had still served as an entrance to alternate way of thinking and most importantly the idea that I don't have to live my life the way it's presented to me. Also helped to renew my love of the outdoors.

It's not my favirote book ever and there's a lot of shame associated with it, but it definitely had the greatest effect on me.

That color guide is pretty bullshit.

Colors that bright would all have the same jarring effect on me, and I'm pretty sure everybody associates colors with different things, so that screams scam.

And for me, Into the Wild. Read it when I was 13 and I was one of those obnoxious "fanboys" and I would walk around listening to the soundtrack and shit. Thankfully I got over and around that, and the book and phase that followed it certainly changed my life.

For those of you who know who Chris McCandless is, could anyone help me or give me a list of reasons as to why Chris was not a hero or a was a fool for going into the wild for an essay?

ITT:

Books that, have you read them in your early/mid teens, would have changed the way you think about life and significantly altered the life you currently lead.

Pic related.
I wish I traveled instead of wasting my time and energy on pursuing 'education' and wealth.

Not a regular /lit/ browser, so forgive my plebiness:

So I know I'm a little late to the party with this one, but wow. I feel like I relate so much to Chris McCandless and the ideals supplemented throughout the story. I love Krakauer's use of accompanying excerpts at the beginning of the chapters as well.

Is there any more literature that shares the same underlying philosophies that this text deals with? Namely the general rejection of typical materialistic society and instead the desire/pursuit of freedom, truth, wisdom, creative thought, etc. You know, the ideals that drove McCandless and his literary heroes.

Speaking of which, have any of you read Thoreau, London, Tolstoy, or any of the other authors frequently mentioned in the story? Specifically, any of their works that are mentioned in the book?

Just finished reading this, thoughts?

Personally, aside from the fact that McCandless never contacted his parents, he seemed like a great man worthy of respect for what he did. The book really helped me understand what he was like and what he was thinking, and now I see our society in a new light.
