Most people who like Sanders's take on magic don't dislike mysticism and curiosity offered by a less well defined magic system, rather they dislike that authors who don't properly define their magic systems are prone to contradict themselves, which shatters suspension of disbelief, and are far more likely to use magic based deus ex machina as a plot device, which is just hack writing.

I don't get why people who sneer at Sanders in particular and well defined magical systems in general find it so hard to comprehend. Tho I should add that when author spends the first chapter defining his magic system it's plain stupid, part of the fun of a well though out magic system is ability of reader and sometimes even characters to divine it trough inference. And when an author does that it's just plain bad writing that ruins pace and mystery, not a fault with the magic system itself.
