I've been gifted both translations and I'm wondering if anyone here has a preference as to which they think is better. I was leaning toward Manheim mostly because modern translations (in my experience) tend to put more emphasis on matching the style of the original compared to older translations, which can sound just like the translator just decided to feed the work into a French-English dictionary. But there have been some older translations I've been able to get more out of because they've focused more on theme and content. Am I overthinking this? After reading the first few pages of each I thought the Marks translation was better, but it's only because Manheim's had this cutesy feel to it, like it was his voice coming through as an imitation and not Celine's. Does Celine sound like that? Anyone have a preference they want to share?

Did you enjoy Journey to the End of the Night?

I'm 3/4 of the way through and starting to lose interest.

How many different English translations are there of this book? I remember reading a version with Céline's face on it and it read differently that this one.

I want to drop this for some reason. I enjoy the book so far but the whole intro of being in battle (WW1) is not appealing to me. Maybe I should just continue and see what happens to the Germans, I know it gets better.

Books about characters walking in the night, smoking and chatting with their pals.
I want a book that's comfy and fascinating.
Kinda the feels that gives the cover of pic related, not the book itself.
