What would the leftist argument even be *against* segregation if they can't shut up about how white supremacy is endemic to Western society? If the problem is practical rather than moral/philosophical, just propose to pay each black person up to $100k to leave. Hell, they printed 2 trillion for Covid just a few weeks ago. If the objection is philosophical in nature - how? I thought our institutions can't help but be deeply racist since white supremacy ("whiteness") is everywhere, even if you don't see it?

I look at this and the cynical part of me cringes. But another part vehemently wishes I could've been an aristocrat in the 18th/19th century, discussing the poetry, plays, and literature of the day, while sipping coffee in the salon and smoking the pipe. Instead I'm the only one in my social circle even vaguely interested in philosophy and literature and I have to get my fix on boards like these. I'm sure these girls have a lot of fun discussing their books, making a nice evening out of it, drinking some wine, having some snacks. While we're posting on anonymous basket weaving forums.

A thought I've had recently is that for all of civilization, literacy and consuming high culture was basically only done by 2% of the population at most. Non-slaves and patricians in Greece & Rome, land-owning aristoracy in the Middle Ages, men of letters in the Renaissance, and nobility/men of means in industrial society. Only very recently have we even attempted to spread literacy to wider society at large, let alone make books available to all (and kind of force them down the throats of children). The more I think about this, the more I think this is the aberration instead of the rule, and perhaps it is right that only 2% pursue high culture after all.

There was this strong sentiment that "if only we give the poor access to books and art, they'll pursue it on their own". But has this prophecy come true? You have to remember that guys like us, who seek out literature boards (let alone simply read books) are STILL a minority. After all the money being sunk into public education and libraries.
