Maybe but Christianity popularised these values and made the adherence to them attractive. Before Christianity, moral universalism was not widespread. And even Christianity as practiced state religion did not always embody these values. The society we have today is due to rigorous enforcement of these ideal Christian values in the 19th century by the fledgling bourgeois society.

I want to read Plato, Aristotle, Augustine and Aquinas, in that order. Given that it's unlikely I'll read everything all of them wrote, I'd like some recommendations for a tentative list of works I should read from each before moving on to the next. I suppose then I'm looking for what is unnecessary to read, or least expedient towards understanding that author and moving on to the next.

All I've read are The Republic and Symposium.
