don't read the prequels. seriously, don't. you can't even read them ironically, or just to see how bad they are. they ARE that bad.

remember at the end of "Revenge of the Sith" where Darth Vader shouts "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!" ? there's a scene like that in one of the prequels. Leto Atreides' first son is killed in a terrorist bombing and when he sees the kid's broken corpse he does the NOOOO thing.

Frank Herbert's writing is like a good steak at a five-star restaurant. the prequels are like half a stick of beef jerky you found down the back of your couch.

i would add to this list the Dune Encyclopedia, which came out after God Emperor, even if Frank Herbert said it wasn't canon... it was infinitely preferable to the giant robot battles of the prequels.
