I want to write a short story about a woman who has become a wandering mercenary, but instead of just doing genderswapped Conan the Barbarian, have her actually struggle with the issues of being a woman in a very masculine profession that she isn't physically optimized for, and having to conceal her sex so that she doesn't just get raped by twenty guys at once.

It's set in 17th century Poland, so there are pistols and muskets and whathaveyou, killing people isn't an issue if you're a dragoon or something, but how do I keep this from feeling like grrl power crap?

Also how do you have a woman act tough without making it total cringe?
