I’ll start: Tolstoy, especially War and Peace

I want to into Tolstoy. I was going to go for War and Peace or Anna Karenina because I hear them mentioned a lot, but I'm intimidated by the length of those books. How slow are they in terms of pace? I might start with one of his shorter books in order to get a taste before committing to his longer novels

also, a side question: is nicotine good for reading

I understand that if we had 'four classic novels' in the west like they do in china, than this would certainly be one of them (along with Don Quixote and some others). The question is this, though; what is the best English translation and where do I read it? I would hate to invest the time and money into such a lengthy book, and develop impressions thereupon only to find out that I've been reading some kind of mangled monstrosity version of it. The natural toss-up is between the edition offered by Penguin and that offered by Oxford World Classics, but I'm curious if any native Russian speaker has an opinion on the matter, or if there is another edition out there which is demonstrably better.

Why is fiction even worth reading when it literally doesn't add anything worthwhile to your living experience

Tolstoy is so fucking based. His writing is flawless and his understanding of the human condition is amazing. I like how there are a lot of positive messages woven into very dark situations.
