Assuming all the “potential boyfriend” outrage isn’t bait and is real, then why is that such a hard concept for you to grasp? I’ve had many women interested in me, and have seen them as potentials for being a girlfriend, but ultimately their lifestyle was incompatible with mine so it would have been foolish to date. Therefore, for a while I considered making them my girlfriend, but ultimately they didn’t become one. Kind of how girlfriend is the intermediate stage between friend and wife, potential-girlfriend is the intermediate stage between friend and girlfriend.

It’s just not something you can qualify. It’s more of an intuitive thing that you just pick up on over time. Maybe that’s why so many ITT have problems with it, because it’s a virtue of sorts. (Virtue in the Aristotelian sense of the word) And hence requires the act for the actor to become better at it.

I’m halfway through 2666 right now (page 506), maybe it’s the translation, but Bolano’s prose is kind of boring most of the time. The story, characters, jokes, plot, and philosophical themes are all basically perfect.

Absolutely great book

Could you explain this for a brainlet.

From what I gather it means that the brother is questioning who he is and wether he even exists or not. He’s questioning who he is becuase when he sleeps he, as he knows himself as an ego, does not exist, and therefore he questions wether he even is. Then he says that Jewel cannot empty himself for sleep becuase he is already emptied, as in he does not either have or have a strong ego. Then later after the rain stops he questions wether or not the wagon exists becuase becuase the rain has stopped shaping it for him. Then he postulates that it must exist becuase addie bundren would not exist if it “was” and since jewel “is” addie bundren must be “is not.” Then he finally comes full circle and comes to the conclusion that he must exist becuase how could he empty himself if there was nothing to empty.

I’ve read the book, and it was a great one. I just never fully understood this part and this was what I drew from it. Faulkner is a master of writing stream-of-consciousness considering that this segment is philosophical inquiry done by a barely literate farmer from Mississippi. Sounds just like what some old crackheads would say to me when I would fuck with them and ask them philosophical questions.
