All esoteric theology have had their roots exposed in the Eleusinian Mysteries of Greece. The cults of Demeter and Dionysus have acted as a peephole into the origins of notions of the afterlife, the immortality of the soul, rebirth, the post-mortem rewarding of good deeds and punishment of evil deeds, union with divinity, spiritual ascension, etc, all of which are found elsewhere in other faiths from that very era. There must have been a time in the world where there was only a single religion, one from which all others have branched out of.
