I got my start when my grandparents would read Shel Silverstein to me before bed, which is where I got my first interest in poetry.
Clearly you're no longer a child and the most obvious place to start is with Shakespeare.
However, if Shakespeare isn't really your thing, or you're looking for something a bit more modern, I'd suggest checking out Robert Frost and Walt Whitman. They're great poets and nearly universally beloved.
The Beat poets are an attractive bunch to newcomers to poetry as well, but I'd tell you to keep off Ginsberg and check out Amiri Baraka instead. Ginsberg is worth reading, but definitely a more acquired taste.
However, if you're more interested in a smooth transition from Classic Lit to Poetry, you can't go wrong with Paradise Lost.

I'm not a psychologist so I'm not quite sure, but Benjy's section of The Sound and the Fury is a fantastic choice. I don't know that his character is schizophrenic, but from the prose told from his stream of consciousness, you know that he definitely isn't right in the head.

The statistics of intelligence scattered across races is not at all reliable and has been called into question as such. The socioeconomic standing of people of color in western nations puts them at a disadvantage from conception of gaining the same amount of education or success as a result of centuries of systemic racism.
The same goes for non-western countries with a majority population of people of color, but instead the reasons being centuries of oppression under imperialism from Western nations completely dismantling these countries abilities to progress at the same rate.
