Does anyone have a link to where I can read "Why They Read Hesse," online for free?

Stevie Smith - Not Waving But Drowning

Nobody heard him, the dead man,
But still he lay moaning:
I was much further out than you thought
And not waving but drowning.

Poor chap, he always loved larking
And now he's dead
It must have been too cold for him his heart gave way,
They said.

Oh, no no no, it was too cold always
(Still the dead one lay moaning)
I was much too far out all my life
And not waving but drowning.

This is actually my favorite Hesse novel. SIddhartha was the first I read. You can really read Hesse's work in any order, but from Sid to N+G should be an easy transition.

And actually I think Demian lays the groundwork for a lot of Hesse's later works. At least the character archetypes he would pursue in pretty much all of his novels.

Yeah, if you're going to string adjectives together you'd better not use a thesaurus to do it.

I'm not sure that is good advice.
I would say practice, practice, practice.
But maybe, don't try to publish anything till you are 25.

Was it Eric Blair who voluntarily went homeless and traveled around Europe just to accumulate material for his writing?
