Where West meets East Main Street there is a park.
And in the corner of that park I hid
A chair. And in that chair I sat, as would a jar,
Waiting for the theater of stars to appear.

So through the folds of trees I peered. But then
Some clouds of midnight blue covered my lid.
And lightning lit those cerebral walls.

Until they passed I smoked and thought:
Was I watching them or were they watching me?

>Nah you're just seeking catharsis because your life is so easy
Why do you think that?
> but your empathy is meaningless and you're not helping anything
I didn't think I was going to help anything. How is my empathy meaningless?

I don't understand why you're so angry. I don't hate myself. In fact, I'm very happy that I have the choice to decide if I eat a bowl of rice or 3 steaks in a day. What makes you think this is masturbatory? I'm not worldly or understanding. That's the thought behind doing this doing this. I don't see how an experiment is necessarily retarded. Perhaps you should put up a real argument.

But we're not doing it because of ennui. We're doing it for empathy.

Can a martyr really suffer?
Some friends and I are going to eat only a bowl of rice a day next week to try to better understand what it's like to be a poor child in Cambodia or China. But if we're doing this for a reason, will that dampen what we're doing? It's not like little sweatshop laborers choose their living conditions. Will we become knights of faith and transcend the mortal coil?

No, I haven't. I have seen plenty of bait, though.

I don't think that's the case. Just look at all the Wittgenstein/logical positivist love.

>Most readers of the book would say he should know the tape was deadly if he mailed it, whether the case was he did know or not.
How could he have? What event lead to him knowing that?
> Logically, he would have to, would it not?
I feel like we're approaching this from opposite directions. You're probably right, but I want evidence.
>Blind luck (or unluck as the case may be) is just simply not a reasonable plot device
I don't care about how well or poorly the book is written. I care about what's actually in there.

We ought to just reread it, and find out more definitively.

>why would he have mailed the tapes if he didn't know they would have killed the recipient?
Some non-murderous purpose. Maybe he didn't want to keep memories of his dead father whom he hated. Maybe JOI's wraith willed it. Could Orin have known that the tape was deadly?

Read theory of the New Critics. Their whole shtick is unity in the text. Seriously study Joyce and Kafka.

Sin & Syntax is pretty solid. What exactly are you looking to get out of a writing book?

King Lear the first time I read it. The scene in IJ where that woman gives birth to her dead baby and walks around with it still attached freaked me out. The only things that make me not want to sleep are things weighing on my conscious, because my dreams always involve entities whom I love judging and punishing me. And the only books that make me afraid to sleep are ones in which I realize something awful about myself. For example, The Sufferings of Young Werther made me realize how stupidly romantic I've been, and how horrible that must have been for my friends.
