MORE!!!!!!

god i love how people in holes just keep digging...

also, i love how you know absolutely nothing about Go. if you're trying to insult me, you just gave me a world-class Go rank.

25kyu is the lowest rank available in online games. would have made sense if you pushed that; according to you, i'm something of a genius

but i really gotta say: for someone who suffers already from a lotta megalomania, its you and your ilk that keep making my day. i honestly did not think even i deserved this much attention. people only post on topics that they care about; clearly i've hit a nerve.

i wonder, friend, just how deep that nerve goes? shall we explore it more? no, for to do so would be a release from that burden--and let's be honest, all you care about is perpetuating that burden for as long as possible--lest you actually have to face your insecurities and become something greater.

don't worry, i understand--we aren't all cut out to be something in this world.

for real, though, loving the attention. i get the feeling you have a crush on me--sorry, im taken ;-)

i love europe central--haven't covered engdahl's work yet but with that sorta endorsement i really have to. what is his general argument? is he for american hegemony--or critical of it?

i've been slowly--slowly--working through a lot of populist lit, but my main concentration in the last week has been eric voegelin's "new science of politics". i actually just posted a summary of the intro:
https://catilineconspiracy.com/2017/04/04/1-16-on-eric-voegelin-intro-to-the-new-science-of-politics-part-i/

voegelin's critique of positivism/value-free science is masterful. he works through comte and weber like no one's business; i think his idea of the societal cosmion and representation/political articulation is profound.

he basically argues that modern science is anything but human science--that it substitutes an artificial, abstracted vision of a value-free man for the reality of human experience. he clearly wants us to return to greek ontology and christian metaphysics--what he sees as fully cosmological worldviews that begin with revelation as the basis of scientific inquiry. his treatments of plato and aristotle have also been really interesting: he focuses on the soul/city relation, e.g. that plato saw the ideal city as composed of the three-parts of the soul, and how it is viz. the one truth (god, the ideal, eidos) that the measure of both is made. it is toward this type of cosmology that he wants us to turn again--i;m not fully convinced, but goddamn if it aint provocative.

if i don't quite make sense it's only because i'm still working through some of it myself.

as i recall correctly, you care a great deal about aristotle, no? your reading of mcintyre was fantastic.

absolutely love our conversations--thanks for dropping a line.

nice--is that a request for a scan?

i really love it. but i also really like being a type of social/intellectual nucleus: that i can invite others over and share books, alcohol, entertainment, etc--i honestly thrive on that type of camaraderie, and thoroughly enjoy offering what i have freely. sure, it has heeps of egoism behind it--but i can usually justify this to myself in terms of a consequentialist argument.

this is a great post all around, thanks. to your point: my style has been and still is probably my greatest academic insecurity. i dunno--ive come far since undergrad, but still find it difficult at times to convey my thoughts in a more sanctioned way. working on it; for sure i imagine your style outranks mine--you seem fairly composed.

love the shakespeare recs--will look into them all. are you a shakespeare scholar?

as far as my family background: my mother is an architect and my father is an accountant. i absolutely come from a lot of privilege--certainly this is what helped launch my collection, my choice of schools, my career, everything and anything i do. what can i say? i did not choose my lot, but am deeply grateful for what it offered me; i have tried not to squander it, though i imagine plenty of people here would argue that is exactly what i've done. so be it--to each his own.

but, i must say--you strike me as one of the more erudite people on this board. id like to be your friend, if you'd have me--my name is william. what's yours?

>>9335533

so those bookshelves are super cheap--i can't even remember where i got them, maybe home depot? i keep all my books in my basement--i used to have really nice wooden shelves, but my sump-pump is faulty and, during heavy rains, my basement will flood. i gave up on trying to preserve the wood and went straight cheap plastic; you'll note that i don't keep books in the bottom shelf/lift some of my shelves for the same reason. honestly, though, they are great shelves and do exactly what i need: hold books.

>>9335890

anytime i have multiple copies of a volume, it is categorically for different classes that required different versions. the only volumes i have that are duplicated because i've written in them too much are my chaucer and my KJV bible.

i have nothing against digital libraries in principle--in fact, i think that this would make moving a whole lot easier. the problem is that i'm not physiologically well built: apart from being cancer-prone, i've had degenerative astigmatism since i was a kid. looking at screens for too long burns into my retnae; i can do it, but i get headaches. books tend to cut that--though, if there was some manner by which i could scan in all my books and get a kindle version for free, then i'd be on top of that shit like white on rice.
