fantastic. i'm actually writing a chapter on arendt for my dissertation--particularly how her ideas of judgment play out against 50s/60s american politics, and further how her idea of "the lie" interacts with vietnam.

did you like the human condition? what do you make of her notion of "action"?

i'd really love to hear more about what you think of her thought--it seems to me that you aren't the biggest fan? but you've also read a great deal, so i can't imagine that you've written her off entirely...

arthur lovejoy has a truly masterful volume on the topic: i cannot tell you how highly i would recommend "the great chain of being"

i commend this project--but i would have never skipped over the romans or scholastics--reading ALL of augustine and aquinas, let alone calvin and luther and various other early christian mystics, i think is imperative.
why focus on original works of science, out of curiosity? i could maybe buy that with the greeks, who laced their math with philosophy, but a lot of the science of the 16th/17th/18th centuries has naturally evolved--Kuhn's work, as well as Collins (sociology of philosophies), are great overviews of the history of science. see also the images i posted in that vein--will happily scan in anything that will save you time.

could you post a more thorough list of what you have covered/intend to cover? i can give more insight upon review.

absolutely not. baudrillard's idea of the simulacrum is just a minor modern trill to the overall socratic notion of the eidos: it was the greeks who first posited the "otherworldliness" of things--that this world is an illusion, that something real lies behind it. baudrillard's "lights and sounds" merely pushes this into a registrar of jargon, and cuts the notion of the reigning eidos that would make any form of transcendental "out" possible. follow baudrillard and you arrive at the type of immature nihilism nietzsche found utterly decadent (and i agree).
