Every woman on Facebook compressed into a single image.

It could be worse, OP.

I agree. There are some great literary action scenes, depending on your definition.
The horse race in Anna Karenina is one of the most intense set-pieces (to use a cinematic term) I've ever read.

This thread makes me jealous. I've never been sad. I mean NEVER. I exist somewhere on the spectrum between 'happy' and 'stressed out.' I never drop below or rise above those emotions.

The class is called Phenomenology and Existentialism. We do Husserl, Heidegger, Satre and Merleau-Ponty. I'm now half way through the semester and need to read one of the texts we've discussed so far. It isn't essential to my degree, but it saves me a lot of strife in my final year if I do this now (currently 2nd year undergrad).

Thanks for those suggestions. They look promising.

I have read excerpts that were set for tutorial discussion, but my comprehension was pretty low. Maybe 30% of what was being said got through to me. I'm hoping that was partly due to it being out of context.

That's probably good advice though, I will certainly return to /lit/ once I have a better understanding of my own lack of understanding.

Well, that's disheartening. I'm pretty persistent when it comes to conquering difficult texts, though. I'm willing to spend a year or more on Heidegger, even after the class is finished. I'm stubborn that way.

How should I go about reading and, more importantly, understanding Heidegger's 'Being and Time?'

What critical texts should I read alongside it, if any?

For some context, I have little or no experience in philosophy, continental or otherwise. I know, it seems stupid to make Heidegger the first thing I approach, but I have no choice. I'm doing a class at university which requires I read either Husserl or Heidegger. Since what I've read of Husserl was just incoherent to me, I'm going with the lesser of two evils.
The class supposedly has no prerequisites, but I'm finding it hard to keep up when I don't even really know what is meant by adjectives like Cartesian and Platonic, relatively fundamental stuff that keeps coming up in class discussion. I'm getting the sense that you can't just jump into a philosopher's work without first exploring all his important predecessors. If this is the case, then tell me straight - I'm fucked. I can handle it. But perhaps tell me who are the major players I need to read in order to catch up, you know, entry level stuff? Because right now, I think I'm below entry-level. I'm not even at the threshold.

Anyway, that's my life story. If /lit/ can provide any assistance, it would be much appreciated.

I love film. My allegiance is still with literature, but when I don't feel like thinking too much, I download a movie.
My current favourites.

Would you mind telling me the titles of the movies in your 5x5, they look interesting and I can't tell what they are by the screenshots.

Actually, I think Fagles is appropriate if you're just reading it for some context and to get the various allusions.
