You've got it all wrong, it's about how he had nothing else to do but hit the road. Yes, he had a blast at times, but at the end nothing ever was of any meaning to him. Basically it's like reading Steppenwolf by Hermann Hesse but with alot of "Americana".

Imagine your character is you, and you don't know shit about mytology, therefore your main character doesn't know shit about mytology, and whatever he does knows, that's how his deities and demons will present to himself

Catcher in the Rye is meant to be enyojed indeed, we only make fun of some of the fanbase. I personally believe Steppenwolf is better than Catcher in the Rye and On the road put together though.
