I can agree with these to certain extent. I'm a science chick but I very rarely socialise with other women. I usually find them shallow and uninteresting.

Someone recommended me this last night after I said that I hated 'A Handmaid's Tale'.
Has she actually written any good books?

Try Merlin's Gun by Alastair Reynolds. Its a short story but I think there are some follow ups/prequels that relate to it. Bit heavy on the technobabble in some bits but an overall good read.

I've only bought a handful of books in my life as my dad has everything worth reading already. He normally gets them at library sales. Make sure to get there early. The condition will be well used most of the time but its the content that counts.
If you want nice leather bound books ebay can be quite good.

Nope, I was a bit disappointed after The Handmaid's Tale and never sought anything else by her.

I heard the audio version of this book and I must admit that I felt that her future distopia was a bit cliché and the plot quite unoriginal.
What did everyone else think?

They are both filled with cliché "best books". Where is the Herman Hesse? Franz Kafka? Oscar Wilde?
Sure, it's ok as a starter list but I would not consider someone who has only read the books on this list as being well read.

I second We, its the book Orwell ripped off to write 1984. I did a paper on it. Not as easy to read but a lot deeper.
