It is not the symbolism that are important, it is the things that are said and done here that matter. For example, the old man says "A man can't ever be defeated, a man can be destroyed but never defeated" Something like that.

Do not pretend you understand, just write things as you know they happen, that way you wont betray reality.

I think we should go to his website and buy a poetry book of his. In his honor and in the honor of free speech.

To say that two million Jews died in the Holocaust would be more accurate, and still perhaps a bit of an exaggeration. Slavs suffered the most.

Wait, only kills 50% of enemy women [which is raped before and after murdering them anyway], the other 50% must be left alive so their bastard children can be raped too, and that way about 50% of children die raped and the other grow very messed and live long enough only to be raped again.

I cannot resist, I must share more wisdom.

"The proper man rapes the children of his enemy and kills their women, and in times of peace, he rapes his own woman right alongside his raped children who he previously raped" ~ German Girl

Finnegans Wake does not become the ultimate literary product just because it comes at the end of the line, that's for certain. Just treat it as an individual work with obvious influences from previous works.

Even Bertrand Russell's why am I not a Christian sounds childish for these modern times, why would anyone even bother to read something titled the satanic bible?

I tend to pay attention to either one thing or the other. So, there is no point in doing both at the same time if I read for art apreciation purposes, and there is no purpose to read if I listen to music for said purposes as well. That would be my general opinion on this matter.

Cien años de soledad is an easy read actually, for some at least. The first two chapters, I went through them easily, in Spanish of course. You know, I could however, tell, why people think this "Magic Realism" has anything magic about it, thus far, it's reality seen through the eyes of people [of the time]. I assume the book will be like this for quite a while until turning into metaphysical fiction, perhaps reality from the point of view of a dead person. Overall though, it's the psyche of individuals that's making the story up through a narrator of course, you know, this work is also a comedy, the humor is just there all over... I can tell this from the first two chapters!

And yes, the context does make it obvious who is who, and characters are not that easily mistakeable just because they are family members.

This book's dificulty has greatly been overrated, don't fall for it OP.

The point? More like, his disgusting opinion: To label, every romantic as shallow and an hypocrite for caring to visit faraway lands and the such.

Typical Brit statements:

"Lets never go out of Britain" "Lets not research more into the sciences, with what we know is enough" "Lets stagnate science while we are a world power" And so on with statements like that. The British, for the most part, with this way of thinking, disgust me.

In short, as if the UK wasn't small enough, for this man there is nothing beyond London in a train. Perhaps you're from London yourself. I could understand the narrowness easily, tolerating it is a whole different matter.

Even as a satire, it was not originally meant as a very orderly and robust progression, but it is indeed tainted by said intentions.
