Oh, well I can get inspiration FOR that first line from an image.

Usually though I'm just thinking about random shit that eventually just makes itself sound good for a poem.

I usually just write the first line on a whim and then rhythmically form a poem around it.

Or I may have an idea for a single stanza and then after it's written down, I re-work it to line up with other stanzas in rhythm/meaning.

Regarding excerpts, how long would they need to be to even be considered a short story by a publisher?

Is there a word count/page count?

The only part I liked in this book is the end.

It just had some element of determination and beauty to it.

While I am trying to work on a novel, would it be suggested to STOP work on it to write/publish a good array of short stories first or do it whilst writing the novel?

Would the novel take away from the time for other pieces? Would writing a major piece among other smaller pieces allow me to stretch my talents and improve?
