Ok /lit/, I just recently got back into reading and this book is highly recommended. I'm about 30 pages in but I'm still confused as to what is going on. The story keeps moving from scene to scene and it's hard to keep track of things. I can sort of understand the perspective is from Benjy (Maury?) who is retarded but that's about it.

Am I missing something?

This first chapter is awful and bordering on incomprehensible. So a bunch of spooks are taking a retard on a wagon ride? Retard's sister is lost?

What the fuck am I reading?

Tell me it gets better or explain how and why I'm incompetent, something at least.

The fact that this novel doesn't have a main protagonist, doesn't follow a traditional story arch, and isn't in chronological order is fine.

But what really confuses me is the language used. Not even the generic southern drawl. The way Faulkner describes scenes and actions is just bizarre.

Maybe I'm just to pleb to understand?

Anything I should know first, or just read it? Sorry for being a shitposting pleb fag

just got through part 1 yesterday; i've been told that it's the most convoluted portion, can anyone attest to this?

not that it matters, because i still intend on finishing it, it's just that the being hyper vigilant for changes in time based on italics or context is exhausting.

Was Benjy the product of incest between Mrs. Compson and Maury?

is As I Lay Dying or any of his other stuff as incomprehensible as this is?

Found a collection of William Faulkner books amidst a variety of other books belonged to my grandfather in my dad's shed. I hadn't heard of Faulkner before today Should I read them? One of which that is apparently great is The Sound and the Fury.

How am I supposed to approach Quentin's chapter? I have no clue what the fuck is going on.

Benjy's chapter wasn't that bad after I began to understand the Compson family tree, but Quentin's chapter is a little too much for me so far.
