You're right.
I correct myself: Writing about 'LOL CONTROVERSY' will get you published, but nobody with a brain or any taste will want to read it, it it will find it's place in the dustbins and you will die unread and forgotten.

Writing about terrorists is overflowing the shelves of Tom Clancy's descendants.

If you fags thing writing a novel that's 'OMG CONTROVERSIAL' will get you published or famous, you need to turn off TV news and read something other then Palahnuick.

I'll never buy an e-reader because there will never be one that lets me do this.

And besides that, I'm just an old-fashioned romantic. Call me crazy. e-books are just not books to me.

Foer is an easy and satisfying read. I recommend it, if that's what you're looking for.

Historically, it's always been held that people need 50 to 100 years for someone to realize that a work is a masterpiece. It's no wonder why so much of what Oscar Wilde thought was trash has wound up on the classics list. Same goes for Nabokov, Dostoyevski, and countless others.

We won't know what was truly great from our generation until we've stepped far enough away from it to view it objectively.

The best way to do it, I found, is mark ahead a few lines where you know there's 'commentary', then read a stanza or two, then read all of it's commentary. Then you get to see, line by line, the editor's madness unfold.

Masterworks. I hold that it's better then Lolita. The prose lacks Lolita's fire, but the story is so perfectly composed, it's such a masterpiece of plot construction.

This might be my favorite novel.

In my bag:
1) Harold Bloom's Shakespeare - The Invention of the Human
2) The Norton Anthology of Theory and Criticism
3) Norton Critical edition of Henry IV Part 1
4) Nabokov's Pale Fire
5) The Iliad

First halfway reasonable debate about politics /lit/ has ever had, and the difference between socialism and capitalism can't even be defined.

Just start raging about ayn rand and get it over with.

I've always heard the opposite.

"The beauty of writing... and life... is working with what you have, through revision and practice, polishing as you go."

I've always heard this quote, and then the one where he told an interviewer he revised what he wrote no less then 30 times.

Strange man, anyway.
