Though, if you're, like, 17-21 years of age, and are just coming off a Kerouac phase or something, then Bukowski might be for you.

Probably his essays. I don't know much about his short stories, as I've never touched them. But starting with Infinite Jest is kind of a toughie, and I know lots of people who started Infinite Jest, gave up on it, and went on to find his essays very enjoyable and engaging.

Harper's has a handful of somewhat ugly PDFs if you're interested. The essay on cruise ships (Shipping Out: On the (nearly lethal) comforts of a luxury cruise) might be a good place to start.

I've been reading Infinite Jest for the past few months. I'm at about page six-hundred so far and I'm finding all of it absolutely fascinating.

I've also read a few of his essays here and there. Recently read the essay on Michael Joyce, as well as the essay about his junior tennis days in the midwest.

The guy can lay on the detail pretty thick sometimes, yeah, but the details are typically just utterly fucking gorgeous, so I never find myself getting bored with anything I've read so far.

Okay, I'll tell you what you do.

Buy Twilight. Then go and carve out some pages in Twilight to where you've made, like, a deep rectangular recession. Then drop a book that she'd like in that recession. But carve up that book too, and leave a note in that recession. It should be in large gothic letters, and say something like-

>I RUINED THESE BOOKS BECAUSE REALLY YOU WOULD NOT HAVE THE TIME AVAILABLE TO READ THEM ANYWAYS, AS WE WILL BE TOO BUSY SPENDING YOUR BIRTHDAY FUCKING.

Then give her the gothic-lettered note within a book within a book and you'll pretty much be golden.

Unless you're trying to fuck her, I wouldn't buy her anything.
